In December 2024, we published an update on Is Threads the Twitter Killer?, our guide for nonprofit organizations that were considering leaving X (formerly Twitter) for Threads. At the time, we were in the early stages of a mass exodus from X following the presidential election and Elon Musk’s involvement in the new administration. And a few months later, the social media landscape continues to be tumultuous.
Daily visits to X are down 8.4%, and daily app users are down 7.2%, since November of last year according to Forbes. While it’s hard to know the direct cause for this decline, it’s likely due in part to Elon Musk’s engagement with the Trump administration and his leadership in Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency. Meta’s Threads has had the biggest increase in daily app users since November but has the lowest daily web visits among X and Bluesky.
Notably, PRWeek recently reported on research conducted by Fire on the Hill that looked at the social media usage of more than 500 journalists. The research showed that while X continues to be the most popular platform for journalists, used by 76% of journalists compared to Bluesky’s 25%, that journalists are engaging more regularly on Bluesky than X or any other platforms.
PR News also reported on the research, noting that “While X may have the larger user numbers, Bluesky has the stronger engagement rate among media—something important for PR professionals to know.”
Are you still using X, or have you shifted to other platforms? We’d love to hear about your experience. Contact us at hello@springboard.partners with your thoughts!
